Proposals for an iconic pedestrian and cycle bascule bridge over Foryd Harbour in Rhyl, Wales, have been submitted for consideration by planners.

The design by Gifford and contractor Dawnus won a competition in 2009.

The scheme is being developed by Denbighshire County Council and Sustrans. It forms part of Sustrans' Connect2 project, which won UK lottery funding in 2007 to develop new walking and cycling routes. The US$6.5 million project will receive US$680,000 from Connect2, with the remainder coming from the European Regional Development Fund and the Welsh Assembly Government.

"The bridge is a bascule bridge which will create quite a spectacle when opening and closing and it will attract tourists and inspire local people," said Denighshire's cabinet lead member for environment, David Thomas. "There is extensive regeneration taking place at the Foryd Harbour that will complement the bridge and revitalise the whole area."
