The 121-year-old retractable bridge was subjected to extreme flooding in Superstorm Sandy and was severely damaged.

It will receive US$1.66 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) public assistance funding for repair and reconstruction.

The Carroll Street Bridge provides Brooklyn pedestrians and motor vehicles with a path across the Gowanus Canal. During Superstorm Sandy, the bridge sustained major damage, with flooding of up to 760mm above the bridge deck. This flooding created the need for repairs to both the bridge and the operator’s buildings.
