An iron bridge in Pune, western India, collapsed on Sunday afternoon injuring 32 people and killing two.

Witnesses say the pedestrian bridge at Kund Mala collapsed suddenly and 20 to 25 people were swept away by the fast-flowing Indrayani River. Others were trapped in the debris.

The National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) attended, and stood down rescue operations the following morning once all missing people were accounted for.

The bridge dates to 1992, and it was declared unfit for use two years ago. Warning notices were regularly ignored by tourists, according to local residents. Kund Mala is a popular tourist site known for its rock formations.

The deputy chief minister of the Maharashtra region has pledged a thorough probe into the incident.
