The project will take 18 months and includes removing the surface, repairing the steel structure and masonry abutments. The bridge, nicknamed The Banana Bridge for its stand-out colour, will then be repainted.

Contractor Griffiths will carry out the work. It is the first major works on the bridge, which has been in place since 1884.

The work will cost up to US$2.5 million and is funded by the UK government.
