The US$113 million contract for the removal and replacement of the Lafayette Street Bascule Bridge in Bay City, Michigan has been awarded to a joint venture.

Known as GKJV-II, the joint venture consists of Granite and Kraemer North America. It will remove the existing structure over the Saginaw River. Then they will install a cofferdam in preparation for the main work, which will include new substructure, bascule piers, structure steel, machinery, a bridge house and approach spans.

The project will begin later this year and the new bridge will be open to traffic in summer 2027. It is funded by the Federal Highway Administration.

The existing Lafayette Street Bridge opened in 1938. It has approach spans with steel multi-girder cross sections. The main span is a Scherzer double leaf rolling bascule. The bridge carries two lanes of traffic, with footways on either side.
