A US bridge project is using a postcard survey to learn more about how much travellers are willing to pay to save time on their journey.

The Interstate Bridge Project has invited community members by mail to take part in an anonymous survey. The questions are about frequency of travel, origin and destination of trips, travel times and preference for different bridges under certain conditions. The data will be used to predict what choices travellers will make once a toll is implemented to ensure that the project can generate enough income.

The Interstate Bridge Project aims to replace the Interstate 5 bridge over the Columbia River between Vancouver in Washington and Portland in Oregon in the northwest of the USA. The present structure is a pair of steel through-truss bridges that date from 1917 and 1958. Each also has a vertical draw lift span for shipping traffic. No decision has yet been made about the replacement’s type or design.
