Colne Valley Viaduct, the UK’s longest rail bridge at 3.4km, has been waterproofed.

Contractor VolkerLaser applied 50,000m2 of GCP Eliminator waterproofing across the deck. They worked alongside other contractors who were constructing walkways, casting concrete and installing acoustic barriers.

The 3.4km viaduct will carry trains travelling at speeds of 200mph across the Grand Union Canal, River Colne, local roads and a series of lakes between the end of the London tunnels and the start of the Chiltern tunnels. It is part of HS2, a new railway between London and Birmingham (link opens in new tab). The viaduct has a lifespan of 120 years and the project has prioritised environmental performance through low-maintenance systems, efficiency and reduced concrete and steel usage.
