Construction has begun this week of a long-awaited pedestrian bridge in Norwich in Norfolk, eastern England. St Anne's Bridge will provide a link between a development zone and the city centre.

The project was originally planned in 1999, but changes in ownership of the adjoining land hampered progress.

The issues have now been resolved and piling work has started on the east side of the river, to be followed by construction of the east ramp. Work will move to the west next month. The steel main span is due for erection in May or June, with opening planned for August.

The bridge was designed by Mott MacDonald. Overall responsibility for project delivery lies with Norwich City Council and the bridge will be built by May Gurney, which has an established contract with Norfolk County Council.
