18th IABSE Congress
On Innovative Infrastructures – Toward Human Urbanism
September 19-21, 2012
Sheraton Grande Walkerhill, Seoul, Korea
The 18th IABSE Congress will be held at the Sheraton Grande WalkerHill Hotel, Seoul, Korea, September 19-21, 2012. The Congress is organised by Korean Group of IABSE (the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering) and Seoul National University in collaboration with the Korean Society of Civil Engineers and Architectural Institute of Korea.
Social infrastructure plays a crucial role in improving our quality of life. While rather limited in their functionality in the past, today’s infrastructure has additional significance as assets and symbols of society. Since most of our industrialised societies have reached a sufficient level of development, is is now time to enhance and maintain our living environment by means of nature-friendly and human-oriented technologies. The Seoul Urban Comprehensive Plan has set the stage for the redevelopment of Seoul, making possible such landmarks as the Cheonggyecheon Stream and the Dongdaemun Design Plaza and Park. Originally constructed in 1410, the Cheonggyecheon Stream, which had been covered in concrete for decades, was restored, and was lauded as a major success in urban renewal and beautification. With the aim of upgrading design and boosting diversity in Seoul, the Dongdaemun Design Plaza and Park project has been organised to be a cultural, recreational and yet environment-friendly complex, focusing on the human connection to an aspect of design. We hope to use this opportunity to introduce vibrant activities in Korea to congress participants.
