The old and new bridges over the Fraser River between New Westminster and Surrey in British Columbia will both be closed for a week while the new bridge is connected to roadways on either bank.
Once the work is done, traffic will be split between the two bridges. The new bridge will open at the end of the month. Patullo Bridge will ultimately be removed.
The new crossing meets modern seismic standards and has greater clearance for improved navigation. It also has four wider highway lanes and a centre median barrier, with the potential to expand to six lanes if needed. And it features dedicated walking and cycling lanes on either side.
Transportation Investment Corporation is overseeing the US$1 billion project. The design and build contractor is Fraser Crossing partners (link opens in new tab).UK-based bridge works specialist Spencer Group created a bespoke stay cable inspection system for the new structure (link opens in new tab).
The province of British Columbia will own the bridge, and it will be toll-free.
