Older moveable bridge structures on a Flemish canal will be moved or renovated to improve mobility on the Moervaart Canal.

Engineering firm Sweco has been contracted by the Flanders waterways authority Vlaamse Waterweg to develop a plan to improve mobility while preserving the heritage value of five existing bridges on the canal, which lies to the north of Ghent. It will also design new bridges and integrate remote control systems.

Two of the interwar structures will be relocated and replaced with structures better suited to modern traffic. Three bridges will be renovated for use by active travellers. And one bridge will be adjusted to accommodate a rearrangement of connecting roads.

The contract is worth US$4.2 million, and the plan will be published in 2027.
