The contract is FCC Construcción’s first in the Netherlands. It involves remodelling a 10.4km section of the road to increase the capacity from three to four lanes in each direction. Work includes the corresponding expansion of existing structures, including bridges and underpasses, as well as new links with other roads. Upgrades to a bascule bridge over the Schiphol Canal also form part of the project. The work has to meet strict technical and term requirements and must avoiding impact on the commercial navigation along the canal.

Another feature of the project is that the motorway will be partially sunk over a length of 1.5km in the area around Amstelveen, with a park built over part of the route.

All works will be executed maintaining the road traffic on the existing highway. FCC said that this involves considerable efforts in planning and execution as well as in the management of complex temporary detours.
