The sweeping cable-supported pedestrian and cycle bridge has a span of 240m and is intended to physically and symbolically unite both sides of the River Foyle.

The project team for the US$21.5 million design and construct contract was main contractor Graham Construction, structural engineer Aecom, architect Wilkinson Eyre and steel fabricator Rowecord.

Client for the scheme is Ilex Urban Regeneration Company. The contract was project managed by McAdam Design, which had led an earlier feasibility study in 2007.

Derry City Council arranged the celebratory ‘Bridging communities’ festival, with the centrepiece being the official opening of the bridge. Celebrations continued with dozens of music and arts events including a fireworks display.
