“The walkway will improve safety for hundreds of thousands of people attending sporting venues each year including major events attracting international visitors,” said sports minister Stuart Ayres.

Moore Park is one of Sydney’s key cultural precincts with Sydney Cricket Ground, Allianz Stadium, the Entertainment Quarter and Fox Studios attracting almost 1.5 million spectators and event patrons and up to 350,000 pedestrian and cyclists annually.

“The innovative bridge design and location was chosen to minimise the heritage, visual and environmental impact on the parklands, including minimising the loss of Moreton Bay fig trees along the boulevard,” said Ayres.

The start of construction on the US$23 million project also marks the start of a lasting tribute to Albert (Tibby) Cotter, a former Australian Test cricketer who was killed in acti on during World War One, said roads minister Duncan Gay.

The bridge is on track to open in time for the 2015 Cricket World Cup.
