A ceremony yesterday marked the start of construction of the Fourth Yangtze River Bridge at Nanjing, China. The main span of its focal three-span suspension section will be 1,418m. Total length of the bridge is almost 29km.
It is on the river's lower reaches, about 10km from the second bridge. The US$929 million bridge is expected to come into operation in 2013.
Results of a national evaluation of the third bridge were published last week. The bridge, which was opened in 2005, was given a construction quality rating of 97.35%, putting it into the "excellent category". Such evaluations are carried out at least two years after completion.
