A contract for the construction of a cable-stayed bridge between mainland West Bengal and an island in the mouth of Muri Ganga River has been awarded to an Indian multinational conglomerate.

The 177m extradosed cable-stayed bridge between Kakdwip and Sagar Island will be built by Larsen and Toubro (L&T), who described the order as “significant”. The project also includes approach roads on either side and traffic management systems, a bridge health monitoring system, lighting and street furniture.

The islanders presently rely on ferry services for connection with the mainland. As the site of India’s second largest annual religious congregation, the Ganga Sagar Mela, the island attracts millions of visitors.
