It has signed an agreement with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for aid in rebuilding the Palu IV bridge and other infrastructure damaged by the September 2018 earthquake and tsunami. The arch bridge, which was about 12 years old, was destroyed.
JICA provided emergency assistance and dispatched a mission for field research soon after the disaster occurred. It collaborated with the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) in formulating a masterplan for post-disaster development in Central Sulawesi Province. A programme of technical cooperation is also being implemented to help the region become more resilient to natural disasters.
