A render of the Fossvogur Bridge in Reykjavic (BEAM)

Fossvogur Bridge is part of Reykjavik’s rapid transit scheme. It will have segregated walking and cycling paths with a bus lane in the middle.

The 270m bridge’s steel structure will be fabricated on temporary foundations and then transported by ship to the site.

BEAM and EFLA won an international competition with their design for the Fossvogur Bridge (link opens in new tab) which includes viewing spaces, known as álfasteinar (fairy stones) that highlight specific landmarks. The bridge’s undulating curves will shelter users from the prevailing wind. Work has already started on seawalls and the bridge will be ready in 2028.
