Melaka state has confirmed plans to submit a proposal for a cross-border bridge linking Malaysia to Indonesia via the Strait of Malacca. The concept outlined by the chief minister Ab Rauf Yusoh envisions a route from Pengkalan Balak in Masjid Tanah to Rupat Island in Riau Province.

The state has allocated US$106,000 (RM500,0000) for consultancy work to assess economic and engineering feasibility ahead of review by Malaysia’s National Physical Planning Council in early 2026. If approved by both federal governments, the link - expected to combine cable-stayed and suspension spans - could become one of Southeast Asia’s most significant infrastructure projects.

The initiative remains at the strategic planning stage, with no timeline or funding commitments confirmed.
