The Licking River Bridge between the cities of Covington and Newport in Kentucky USA has closed ahead of its demolition.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has commissioned the replacement KY8 bridge from a design-build team consisting of PCL, Stantec and Rosales + Partners (link opens in new tab).

The new structure will be a 136m-long span formed by three slender arches 17.7m above the road and supported on V-shaped concrete piers. Its arches act as a physical and visual barrier between vehicles and active travellers on a pair of 3.7m-wide cantilevered shared-use paths.

During the closure, motorists will take a detour over Girl Scout Bridge, while Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky is offering a shuttle service to pedestrians and cyclists.

The demolition will be completed in the spring and the new bridge will open in the middle of 2028.
