Essex Highways is seeking to remove the existing structure - which is in a deteriorating condition – and replace it with new bridge. A temporary crossing will be installed to carry traffic during the construction period.

Essex Highways tendered for the works to replace Finchingfield Bridge in December 2021 as a design and build scheme. The contract with Jackson was agreed in June 2022 after a period of negotiation.

Since then, Jackson’s design consultant, Waterman, has begun developing the outline designs undertaken by Essex Highways.

The new bridge in Finchingfield will resemble the existing structure

The intention is to construct a lasting structure that is visually similar to the current structure. The bridge and pond elevation will be constructed to the same dimensions as the existing and new heritage bricks will be selected through the construction of sample panels. Construction of the bridge is due to start in summer 2023.
