The record-breaking Sutong Bridge was formally opened on Monday in east China's Jiangsu Province after five years of construction. The cable-stayed bridge's main span of 1,088m is the world's longest and its steel and concrete towers stand 300.4m high.
The US$1.15 billion bridge, which links the cities of Nantong and Suzhou, is 32.4km long with 8,146m spanning the Yangtze River. It had undergone a month-long trail with daily flows of 20,000 to 30,000 vehicles before Monday's opening ceremony.
Main contractor for the project was 2nd Navigation Engineering Bureau and Maunsell Consultants Asia was the contractor's engineering consultant.
