A USA project to replace a drawbridge serving 11.25 million rail passengers every year has received federal funding from the National Infrastructure Project Assistance programme (MEGA).

Draw One dates from 1931 and carries a railway over the Charles River between the cities of Boston and Cambridge on the east coast of the USA. The pair of single-leaf through truss rolling bascule bridges has two moveable spans.

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s modernisation project will result in a bridge with three more reliable two-track spans. It also includes replacement of the control tower and an extension of the bridge platform.

The project is expected to make the bridge more climate resilient as the new crossing will be higher than a projected sea-level rise.
