Vietnam celebrates Binh Bridge opening
Opening of Vietnam's new Binh Bridge over the Cam River in Haiphong was timed for 13 May to coincide with the city's 50th anniversary of its liberation. The new crossing is the second biggest cable-stayed bridge in the country with a total length of 1,347m, an effective width of 22m and a navigational clearance of 25m.
The bridge is continuous and has three different cross-sections; in the approach spans, in the back spans and in the main span resulting in an effective and economical combination. The main span of the cable-stayed bridge is 260m, it has back spans of 100m length and pylons just over 101m above water level.
The bridge design was financed by Foreign Affairs for Finland and prepared by Finnroad in association with WSP Consultingkortes as the main bridge designer.
Construction was financed by a loan from Japan, and supervision and completion of the design to Japanese standards was prepared by consultant Chodai with the help of original design group. Japanese contractor IHI-Shimitsu-Sumitomo built the bridge over a 30-month programme and at a cost of US$77 million. (Photo: Esko Jarvenpaa)
