Officials from Monmouth County, North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA), New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) broke ground for the new bascule bridge last week.

The current bridge (below) will remain operational while the new bridge to the south is being constructed.
Monmouth County awarded the US$107.5 million construction contract to Richard E Pierson Construction in May. Hardesty & Hanover was the prime consultant for the design phases of the project, and is also contracted by Monmouth County to provide construction engineering services. WSP is contracted by Monmouth County to provide construction inspection services.
