The bridge - one of the oldest in the Vancouver metropolitan area - opened in 1937 and was designed for a 50-year life. The new Pattullo Bridge will be located upstream of the existing through-arch bridge; the project will also include connections in Surrey and New Westminster and the removal of the existing structure.

The new cable-stayed bridge will have four lanes as well as walking and cycling lanes, separated from traffic, on both sides of the crossing.

The province will proceed with the request for qualifications phase of a competitive procurement process this spring, with construction scheduled to start in summer 2019 and the bridge opening to traffic in 2023.
