Work on the bridge project had originally begun in 2007 but was later halted.

The 2.4km bridge will span part of the Adriatic Sea to connect the peninsula of Peljesac with the Croatian mainland, avoiding the need to cross Bosnia & Herzegovina at the Neum Corridor.

The US$595 million project covers the bridge and access roads; two later phases of the overall scheme will build further parts of the road network.

The aim is to choose the contractor by the end of the year and start work in early 2017.
