President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali described the Bharrat Jagdeo River Bridge as a ‘coming of age investment’. He credited the groundwork of previous governments in planning and reserving land for the structure.
It was constructed by China Railway Construction Corporation to replace an older harbour bridge at a cost of US$262 million (link opens in new tab). The new bridge has four vehicle lanes, plus lanes for pedestrians and cyclists, and it has sufficient clearance to allow the passage of ships.
