The construction of a four-lane 220m precast concrete replacement bridge in Guyana is one third complete, according to a progress report.
The president of Guyana Mr Mohamed Irfaan Ali was told that the completion date of the Mackenzie-Wismar bridge would be in April 2026. The Guyanese government’s contractor is China Railway Construction (link opens in new tab).
CRC has set up a temporary trestle bridge to avoid placing extra load on the existing bridge over the Demerara River in the north east of the country. They are presently installing a drilling platform and will start on pile construction in early February. Work on a girder fabrication yard begins in March.
In August, the president of Guyana announced that there would be no toll to cross the new bridge. It replaces a steel and timber structure built in 1967 by a bauxite mining company. The project is backed by funding from Saudi Arabia (link opens in new tab) and the bridge is a key link with Berbice Deep Water Harbour in the north of the country.
