An international viaduct linking Candelaria and Campichuelo across the Paraná River in north-east Argentina has been proposed by the governors of the Province of Misiones and the Paraguayan Department of Itapúa.
The project is the first to be advanced through a new cooperation agreement signed in August and will provide a permanent crossing for two cities currently linked by pedestrian ferry with a limited timetable.
"This is a long-dreamed project that we've been considering since 2013. We know we already have an international bridge connecting Misiones and Paraguay, but it is now aging and was designed for a much smaller flow of vehicles and people than what we have today. Our region has practically grown fivefold, so it is important to advance on a second bridge connecting these localities,” said Paraguayan governor Francisco Javier Pereira Rieve.
Local sources report that a feasibility study is to be carried out for the implementation of a vehicle ferry service that will remain in place until completion of the international viaduct.
