The state governor of Gujarat has insisted that poor quality materials did not cause the collapse of an under construction bridge.

Six concrete slabs on the railway bridge at Palanpur in north west India gave way on Monday, killing two people.

The Times of India reports that contractor GPC has asserted that there was no compromise on material quality. The state governor Kanhubhai Desai backs this up, blaming a ‘fabrication workmanship’ problem.

A technical assessment is underway.
