The re-opening of a historic dockyard bridge in north east England has been delayed after paint stripping and scaffolding access revealed the extent of corrosion.

North East Lincolnshire Council and contractors Spencer Group and Equans announced that the Grade II listed Corporation Bridge will not re-open to road traffic in December as planned.

The single-leaf Scherzer rolling lift bascule bridge has been in place over the tidal Alexandra Dock, Grimsby, since 1925. It was successfully lifted in 2021 ahead of the restoration process which began in February 2022 (links open in new tabs).

The contractors are making further inspections of the bridge, which will allow them to come up with a programme of work. As a Grade II listed structure, the bridge is protected by UK law against undesirable changes. The work is funded by the Department for Transport, as well as the council and the local transport fund.
