The bridge was badly damaged in September last year by construction barges that became unsecured when Hurricane Sally hit the USA (link opens in new tab).

FDOT said that concrete has now been poured for the first new span needed for the bridge and that an additional piling-driving crew has been added to ensure work remains on schedule.

Latest figures for progress on the demolition and repair activities include:

  • Eight fully damaged spans removed;
  • 13 partially damaged spans removed;
  • 21 damaged pedestrian path beams removed;
  • 66 damaged I-beams removed with eight replaced;
  • Five other damaged elements removed;
  • 30 replacement piles driven.
