The Icelandic Minister of Transport has broken ground on a bridge that will carry buses, cyclists and pedestrians over the sea between capital city Reykjavik and the peninsular of Kopavogur.

It is part of Borgalina, a rapid transit scheme launched in 2015 to improve public transport options in the region. The bridge has separated paths for cycling and walking traffic, with a bus lane in the middle.

Fossvogur Bridge was designed by BEAM and EFLA (link opens in new tab), winners of an international design competition. The undulating girders on each side are intended to partially shelter bridge users from the prevailing wind. The footway includes rest areas with views of specific landmarks.
