Mabey Bridge will design and install a bridge to link the islands of Great Bernera and Lewis. The new structure, which will be made from Mabey's Delta system, will replace a crossing that has been closed to traffic over 7.5 tonnes since August 2020 when deterioration was identified during an inspection.
The original Bernera Bridge was built in 1953 and is believed to be the first prestressed concrete road bridge in the United Kingdom. The connection between the two islands crosses Loch Roag, a fast-flowing inlet of the Atlantic.
The local council, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council), has ordered Mabey Bridge’s single-span Delta bridge for installation on a permanent basis. The bridge will provide access to vehicles up to 44 tonnes across a width of 4.2m, including a 1.05m pedestrian walkway.

Delta is available in clear spans up to 100m.
The bridge in Scotland is expected to be completed in summer this year.
